Rick and Morty Fans Rejoice: McDonald’s Is Bringing Back Its Famous Szechuan Sauce

Buried in a McDonald’s (MCD) advertisement for its brand-new Buttermilk Crispy Tenders is an announcement that is sure to delight Rick and Morty fans.

The fast-food chain is temporarily bringing back Szechuan Sauce, the cult-classic 1998 Chicken McNugget dip whose mention by the Adult Swim series in April has sparked a massive online campaign for its revival.

“After nearly 20 years (and perhaps a bit of time travel) we’re even doing the impossible,” reads the McDonald’s advertisement teasing its “one-time only, limited-edition, run of Szechuan Sauce in select restaurants” on Oct. 7.

But unlike its original 1998 run as a tie-in to the Disney animation Mulan, the Szechuan Sauce will accompany the fast-food chain’s Buttermilk Crispy Tenders instead of its classic Chicken McNuggets. The chain will also be also giving away 1,000 screen-printed posters depicting its full dipping sauce lineup.

McDonald’s has hinted at bringing back the dip after it was name-checked in Rick and Morty‘s season three premiere, first aired on April Fool’s Day this year.

“I’m driven by finding that McNugget sauce. I want that Mulan McNugget Sauce,” Rick says toward the end of the episode. “That’s my series arc, Morty. If it takes nine seasons, I want that McNugget Szechuan sauce.”

“I’ll see what I can do,” McDonald’s corporate chef Mike Haracz tweeted in April.
